If you get your CBT at 16 you can upgrade to a restricted 50cc bike at 17. When you turn 19 you can upgrade to an A1 licence that allows you ride a 125cc motorcycle without L plates or carry a passenger.
The A2 is an upgrade from the A1 and it is possible to obtain this either by taking the direct access theory and practical test or by upgrading from an A1 after two years.
A1 Licence

The A1 is the first step on the bike licensing ladder. It allows you to ride mopeds and motorcycles up to 125cc and with the maximum power output of 11 kW. The A1 licence is available to anyone who is 17 years old or older. It's the ideal way to begin your motorbike journey.
To gain an A1 licence you will be required to complete the Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) and pass both a theoretical and two-part practical test. The CBT course offers essential motorcycle training, and helps prepare you for the practical and theory tests. You will need an instructor on motorcycles to accompany you during your A1 practical test. The test will last about 20 minutes and will consist of modules 1 and 2. Module 1 is held in the training centre and focuses on off-road manoeuvres including controlled stops, a slalom, and a figure of eight. The remainder of the test is performed on roads, and will focus on your ability to manage a motorbike while at speed.
Module 2 will be based on riding a motorcycle through traffic and navigating junctions. You will be tested in regards to your ability to follow road signs and comprehend and apply the laws of the road. You will also be required to demonstrate your ability to ride at a slow speed and do slow control exercises such as turning left, riding up and down hills and a U-turn.
After you have completed your A1 licence you can upgrade to an A2 licence once you have passed your CBT, Theory and Practical Tests. You can then operate any A2 category bike, and can carry passengers.
A2 Licence
The A2 Licence is the second stage in getting a full motorcycle license. The A2 licence is obtainable at the age of 19 years old with an active CBT course and is a restricted version of the full motorcycle licence. It permits riders to ride motorbikes that have a maximum power output of 47 BHP although bikes that produce more than this limit can be restricted up to 94 BHP.
If you choose to take the A2 option and pass the A2 test, you must pass Module 1 and Module 2 in your motorcycle test. Both tests can be booked through the same location that you book your CBT course or the theory test. The A2 route is ideal for riders who have completed their CBT course quickly and are able financially and terms of experience to upgrade to a bigger motorcycle.
The first module of the A2 motorcycle test is an indoor exercise in which you will learn how to control your bike, which includes emergency stops and slow speed manoeuvring. You will then go through the road portion of the test, in which you will have to demonstrate hazard-avoidance exercises and road positioning. You will also have to perform life-saving checks and maintain a 2-second gap from the vehicle in front. There are minor mistakes that you can make up to 10 violations. This can include not using your mirrors or not maintaining an appropriate distance.
After passing both modules of the A2 motorcycle test, you are able to ride any motorcycle that is in the A2 category. This includes the popular Honda CB500F or Yamaha MT-07 model. These bikes aren't particularly powerful but they are more than capable to handle the speed limits, and offer a comfortable and enjoyable ride.

A3 Licence
The A2 Licence is a natural step up from the CBT and lets riders move up to larger bikes with higher power output. The A2 Licence offers additional benefits that aren't available with the CBT. For example you can use motorways or transport passengers. You can move from CBT to A2 by taking additional training and passing the relevant tests. The A2 license is valid for two years. After that, it can be upgraded to an unlimited A license.
The first step towards obtaining your A2 license is to pass the Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) and Motorcycle Theory Test. After you have completed these requirements, you can take the Module 1 and Module 2 practical tests. The module 1 exam involves demonstrating your riding skills on a closed circuit, whereas the module 2 test entails riding on an open road.
You should be able to demonstrate good observation skills during the A2 practical exam and anticipate road hazards. You must also be able make the right road position and perform controlled maneuvers. You must be able, for instance, to make a U turn or figure eight. You should also be able to control the bike when in slow-speed situations such as turning at junctions and responding to traffic signals.
After passing your A2 test, you can begin to work towards the full A license. You can do this by either passing the direct entry exam or taking the progressive access route. You must pass both mod 1 and 2 practical tests as well as the theoretical test to qualify for direct entry.
The A1 and A2 licenses differ from the rest of the motorbike licenses because they are restricted by weight-to-power ratio not engine cc's. Even 600cc bikes can be A2 compliant if they are equipped with restrictor kits. However it is not the case that all bikes that claim to be A2 conforming are actually compliant so you should conduct some research prior to deciding to buy one.
A4 Licence
